LUTHER – Siblings and Sevens – 12″
Black Numbers The debut EP from Philadelphia’s LUTHER. Forming in late 2010 Luther bring back memories of a simpler and more organic time in rock music. While making no attempts to hide their punk rock roots Luther replace the overt aggression flooding the current world of punk with passion and a sincere sense of urgency. Living in South Philadelphia, Luther’s exposure to the city’s diverse music scene creates a varied sound that results in a refreshing mixture of indie, punk … Read More

Love Of Everything – Sooner I Wish – 7″
Bobby Burg (Joan of Arc, Make Believe, Vacations) has certainly been active lately.
Within the past couple years he self-released Love of Everything’s seventh full-length, Best In Tensions, and teamed up with Jeremy Bolen (Chin Up Chin Up) to put out a 13-song Vacations 7″.
As well, he’s been a mainstay in Joan of Arc for the last nine years – playing bass on the Chicago-based band's last two albums while touring the U.S. and Europe multiple times in support of those records.
On top of all this, Burg and his wife (ex-LOE drummer) recently got divorced…
As a result, Sooner I Wish, the latest offering from Burg’s solo project Love of Everything, features four of his most personal songs to date.
“A lot of it involves dealing with a divorce and not knowing how to start again with another person,” says Burg. “The lyrics are written from contradictory perspectives, switching line by line between the person who wants to end the relationship and the person who wants to make things work.”
Recorded live with a loop pedal and no overdubs except on the vocals, these tracks feature new drummer Matt Holland (Air Waves, Vacations) and were shaped in moments of down time during Vacations' practices.
Although the record clocks in just below nine minutes, Burg's catchy melodies stick in your head instantly upon first listen and are sure to linger there long after the songs have ended.

Grey Area / Go Rydell – 7″
This split 7″ marks the first release by the newly reformed NYC veterans Grey Area in over 10 years and pairs them with Florida's best and brightest, Go Rydell. Grey Area (ex members of Warzone, Token Entry, Black Train Jack, and a slew of others) reignited their passion for playing together with two sold-out reunion shows in New York and Philadelphia and a surprise special guest set at This is Hardcore 2010. On the heels of these hugely successful shows comes the band's first recorded effort in their post-Victory Records career. More than holding their own, pop punk/hardcore favourites Go Rydell, named one of Alternative Press's 100 bands you need to know in 2010 deliver two of their most melodic songs to date. Having shared the stage with Terror, H20, Title Fight, and recently named to This is Hardcore 2011, the Florida quintet has been quietly building a name for themselves for years. The first pressing of 500 is nearly sold out.

Bangers – Small Pleasures – LP
The new BANGERS album “Simple Pleasures” packs intelligent lyrics and tight musicianship into a mid-tempo punk rock melee. The record is littered with subtle hooks, head-bobbing breakdowns, and endearingly gruff vocals. Couple those components with an amazingly warm sound it makes this full length incredibly authentic sounding. It’s hard to put a finger on what one thing that makes you want to listen to “Small Pleasures” on repeat but I guess that is what makes it so darn perfect. Great music for drinking to, or driving to, just try not to do them both at the same time.
1994! – Most Deaf – 7″
Purple vinyl – first pressing
Lancaster PA’s 1994! are a heavy duo de force. The songs on “Most Deaf” just don’t let up. A plethora of attitude with belted out hoarse vocals, soaring riffs, and grooving tempos make it reminiscent of a lot of the great emocore bands of the 90’s. (Yeah “emocore,” because that’s what kids called it back then, before it became a generic, over produced, over hyped, fashionable, and haircut driven bastardization that everyone knows today.) Time to stop ranting, trust us this is totally worth checking out!

Dirty Tactics – The Divine Middle – 7″
Philadelphia's Dirty Tactics bring 5 tracks (4 on the vinyl) melodic mid tempo punk rock to the table on The Divine Middle EP. Sometimes sad sounding, sometimes upbeat, sometimes angry, this is a complete record that doesn't stick to any generic or worn formulas. Lyrically, each song unfolds like a short story. Musically, the band has honed their chops and really kept a focus on dynamics in their song-writing. There are hints of Against Me!, hints of Americana at times, but these boys can't be pegged down to any one genre or “sound alike” band.
This EP was recorded by The Pete from the Bouncing Souls. Definitely worth checking out!
First pressing, coloured vinyl.
Attica! Attica! – Napalm & Nitrogen – LP
Black Numbers Limited coloured vinyl!
“We are genuinely stoked to announce the physical release of the second Attica! Attica! full length, “Napalm and Nitrogen”. Previously known as the singer for De La Hoya and Marathon, our good friend Aaron Scott has created an amazing acoustic career under the A!A! name. Napalm and Nitrogen has been available for a bit in the digital only format and we thought it only proper to give it a sweet vinyl release.
Limited to 500 and on 3 different colors, Napalm and Nitrogen is a must have for fans of good music. Following Aaron through his well publicized bike tour (Aaron toured the entire eastern seaboard on his bike playing shows along the way),his stints at the fest, or his recent help with the “Don’t Hang Out in Front of the House” compilation, A!A! is something that we’ve been huge fans of and are happy to be a part of.”
Circle Pit – Slave – 7″
Hardly Art – har033
750 on white vinyl
Circle Pit is, and began as, the project of Angela Bermuda and Jack Mannix, though their live show is comprised of a six-person troupe. They have stepped away from the tough grit of their debut to craft the two songs for this 7″ release, which delve deep into a strung-out rabbit hole of lush, droning vocals and guitar layers, stretched out and slow-burning; the melodic equivalent of stabbing your heart with a dull ice pick. Circle Pit are impossible to get ahold of.
“There's no rock n' roll bands that are any good, except for us.” –Circle Pit
Cobra Skulls – Bringing The War Home – 12″
Cobra Skulls go against the very laws of nature, but once you’ve heard them somehow it all makes sense. Like some lab experiment gone horribly right. Beyond their unique amalgam of musical styling, there is also the highly charged message behind their music.
Benito Band – Caterpillar Pantomine – CD
Two strangers meet in the gutter one rainy evening. The streets of Brussels – no place to raise a family – are nonetheless drenched with the creative energy that birthed Benito Band.
From their humble beginnings as a raucous party band, fitting equally into either a backpack or hatchback, Benito Band, with simple music and dense lyricism, have shaken asses and taken minds across Europe, playing over 150 packed and sweaty shows since mid-2008 in Belgium, France, Spain, Italy, Germany and the UK, as well as in their native Canada.
Founding members Scott Hamilton (Keys, Vox) and Dexter Davies (Drums, Vox) were joined in 2010 by Icelandic multi-instrumentalist and all around bag of tricks, Knut Greenfjord (La Fanfare du Belgistan), adding a new level of saxophone-tuba-harmonica-Theremin madness to the already difficult-to-describe blend of Lumberjack Ska, Carnival Blues and Power Folk Vintage which is ascribed to the group. The music is at all times fresh and feel-good; exhilarating and poignant; dense and inspired.
Influenced by, though barely referencing, contemporary party bands such as Man Man, the Slackers and progressive video game music acts, Benito Band are like Bob Dylan and the Band in a jam session with the Skatalites after a night heavy with Hawaiian girls, old Canned Heat records and too many fugues. Though other excited comparisons could be made, the reality is that the group is none of these predecessors but a fresh breath of crisp northern air blowing through smoky, overcrowded clubs and raising the voices and spirits of a jaded generation of concertgoers who scream for more and more and more.
Through their self-produced, cave recordings on the now nearly vanished ‘Two Man Gentleman Band Mini-LP’ (2008), to their first full-length, independent release ‘Sarsaparilla Jacuzzi’ (2009), to the recently completed demo: ‘Caterpillar Pantomime’ (2010), Benito Band forges forth into the musical unknown, packing only a toothbrush and a bottle of forgotten tomorrows.

The Hot Toddies – Get Your Heart On – LP
HOT TODDIES “Get Your Heart On” Review @ Pop Matters ?
Since Best Coast is shaping up to be the Animal Collective of 2010, expect more attention for bands that bring that brand of beach blanket beat. Oakland’s Hot Toddies are four California Gurls tough enough to be on Asian Man Records, but with no compunction about rhyming “Seattle” with “skedaddle” (as they did on their 2007 debut, Smell the Mitten). Fans of Asian Man alumni Alkaline Trio will appreciate Get Your Heart On‘s nod on “Matt Skiba Sandwich”, and the gluten-intolerant should enjoy “Celiac Love Song”. The sweet sing-alongs, with delightfully rudimentary arrangements and lyrics about boys n’ beers, have an endearing “Hey kids, let’s put on a show!” kind of quality. It’s as if Darla and the other girls on The Little Rascals grew up, moved to Malibu and developed an enthusiastic taste for guitars and Guinness. Thank goodness for global warming, because now you’ve got the perfect delayed-summer jams.
Shores – Coup De Grace – LP
Screen-printed cover, coloured vinyl
The roots of Michigan’s SHORES tap the wellspring of RED HOUSE PAINTERS, BEDHEAD, THE NEW YEAR, CODEINE, LOW, SPAIN, SEAM, and SLOWDIVE. The first haunting note of “Coup de Grace” rings out, clear and clean, followed in time by another drenched in natural reverb, the living sound of a dark, wooden room. Not a cathedral, not a church, but a place of warmth and comfort nonetheless. The patient crescendo builds, the percussion kicks in, rocketing the dynamics into full play. Clean guitars, loud drums, clear vocals. Purposeful over casual, downbeat yet forward moving. Dark, not depressing. A rainy day, a late night adventure. —Var.
